It’s not only important WHAT you do, but it’s possibly even more important WHY you do it. No matter what line of work you are in, it’s always good to ask yourself, “What’s my motivation?”
At Orphan Nutrition Sponsorship, we have a little secret we’re letting out. We don’t choose to help orphans improve their health and development with better nutrition because we are good people. We certainly don’t do it to make money (100% of the money donated to ONS goes towards the purchase of nutrients!) Actually, our motivation comes from a book.
We aren’t ashamed of it. We are Christ-followers! We believe in the true and living God that exists in three persons; God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit. The book our motivation comes from is The Bible. In it are the very words of God that we may know more about Him, ourselves, and how we can be reconciled to Him through the death of His son Jesus who after three days was resurrected and still lives today.
You may be asking, “How does any of that have to do with caring for orphans?” Good question. I’m getting to that. One of themany things we learn about what matters to God is that He has a heart for orphans (the fatherless). If that is something that our God cares deeply about, shouldn’t we also? Not only that, He actually calls us to care for them, so it’s really a matter of obedience. God’s word says in 1 John 5:2-3, “This is how we know that we love God’s children: when we love God and obey his commands. For this is what love for God is: to keep his commands.” So, if we say we love God, we show evidence of that by obeying Him, and caring for Orphans is one way we do that.
Isaiah 1:17 – “Learn to do what is good. Pursue justice. Correct the oppressor. Defend the rights of the fatherless. Plead the widow’s cause.”
Hosea 14:3 – “…For the fatherless receives compassion in you.”
Deuteronomy 10:18 – “He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the resident alien, giving him food and clothing.”
James 1:27 – “Pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained from the world.”
Psalm 82:3+4 – “Provide justice for the needy and the fatherless; uphold the rights of the oppressed and the destitute. Rescue the poor and needy; save them from the power of the wicked.”
We also make a conscious choice to partner with non-profit organizations that are decidedly Christian in their principles and practices. We care for the orphan’s physical needs so that they have the opportunity to hear about the God who can alone supply their spiritual needs. If you’d like to join us in caring for orphans by meeting their physical needs, you can make a donation HERE.
