Paleo vs. Keto

Are you confused by the terms being used by your friends about what diet they are on? Not sure what the difference between a Keto diet and a Paleo diet are? This post is for you! We’re explaining the key differences so you’ll be “in the know” and can then make an informed decision whether you should be trying either one or neither.

The Keto diet is a very low-carb, high fat diet. It is similar to the Atkin’s diet in that it is all about keeping your carb intake as low as possible. Keto doesn’t just stop at keeping carbs low. The aim is to then replace them with healthy fats. When you do this, it puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis. Ketosis is when your body burns fat for energy because it doesn’t have any glucose. When your body enters ketosis, fat travels to the liver and produces an acid called ketones. The ketones then enter your blood stream and convert into energy. After a while, your body gets used to burning fat for energy, which results in weight loss.

There are many benefits to being on the Keto diet, one of them being weight loss. On top of that, it can reduce blood sugar and insulin levels significantly. There has also been research that found that Keto might help lower the risk of heart disease.

The paleo diet focuses on eating foods that are more natural and eaten by early history humans. This diet consists of eating whole foods such as grass-fed meats, seeds and nuts, eggs, fish, and organic fruits and vegetables. By eating these kinds of foods, it gives the body more of the nutrients it needs to thrive. However, getting all the nutrients your body needs through diet alone is next to impossible. Paleo avoids eating things such as processed foods, sugar, grains, dairy, beans, and legumes. The thought process of the creators of the paleo diet are that since these kinds of foods were introduced later in history, our bodies are not well-equipped to digest them, leading to digestion problems, inflammation, and food allergies.

Just like the Keto diet, one benefit of the paleo diet is the loss of weight. It can also lead to improved blood sugar, sleep, energy level, and mood.

What are the key similarities and differences between the two diets?

  • Both diets are about eating high-quality, nutrient-rich food
  • Both eliminate grains and legumes
    • Paleo eliminates dairy, Keto doesn’t
  • Keto is usually higher in fat than Paleo
  • Paleo is typically higher in carbs than Keto
  • Paleo is better for overall health and also somewhat sustainable
  • Keto is better for short term stints for weight loss
